Ch.6: Cold feet at the clinic

Cathy was hesitant to get the abortion done. She feared that it would hurt and that she could be injured during the procedure. She also naturally wanted to keep the baby. It is human instinct to want to reproduce, even though it was only a fetus at that point.

She imaged how cruel it was to pull the two inch long baby out of her and kill it. Cathy read stories of how some abortions are so late that the baby comes out making cries. The nightmare stories of how the clinics cut the head off scared her into trying to talk Jake out of making her do it.

Jake couldn’t afford to pay for a child for the next eighteen years. He had no money to pay for child support. He knew Cathy would make him pay, he wouldn’t be able to just be an unemployed stay at home dad. Few women want to give men that luxury.

There was a lot of emotions involved in the decision. Jake himself wanted a baby girl to raise and show the world. He imagined the joy of fathering a baby into a responsible adult. Cathy found it strange that he wanted a baby girl. She thought that most guys wanted a boy. He grew heated over her criticism and gave her an icy cold stare.

The weekly meetings that Cathy and Jake held at the park started to get more and more heated. There was a time line that they had to go by, it wasn’t like they could just wait around anymore. A decision had to be made to go and get the gruesome procedure done.

“I know this is hard for you, but if we wait any longer the abortion will cost more. If we wait more than that, the abortion won’t be legal anymore” he told her as he held her hand. “I know, I know…I just…I just” Cathy couldn’t speak. It was obvious that she was extremely stressed out over the situation. She was at a breaking point and needed moral support from Jake.

He was there for her, but not as much as she needed. The whole situation was growing overwhelming stressful for Jake as well. He considered suicide a thousand times over. The suicidal tendency that an unsuccessful man with a baby on the way was going through was all too scary. He had urges to plunge a knife into his neck on a daily basis. Jake gripped a sharp surgical looking knife and had a rush of adrenaline while smirking at the shiny blade. He knew that death wasn’t instant. A quick stab to the neck may just result in serious injury and more pain. Death wasn’t guaranteed, especially when he knew he might not push it all the way into his neck. He realized that he would probably pull back as soon as the knife entered the first inch of his neck. That would just leave a severe wound and not accomplish anything.

He didn’t tell Cathy about his suicidal urges, but he figured that she wouldn’t care at all.
